Services for Wayne "Big Joe" Whittington, 82, Baldwin City, were Tuesday, at the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Whittington died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born March 25, 1917, in Lebo, the son of Phillip and Susan (McKinney) Whittington. He grew up in Reading, graduated from Reading High School and worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 37 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1982. Mr. Whittington served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tech Sergeant for the Ninth Combat Cargo Squadron. He was a member of the American Legion and Masons in Baldwin City. He married Mary Bell on Oct. 15, 1961, in Baldwin City. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Kellie Phillips, Baldwin City; four brothers, Jake, Chicago; Gene, Wichita; George, Reading; and D. L., Americus; a sister, Margie Martin, Madison; and three grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Wayne Whittington Memorial Fund, in care of the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, P.O.
